Fasten Your Seat Belts!

Ms. Frizzle always said: “If you keep asking questions, you’ll keep getting answers!”. With this new term beginning I hope to continue to ask question and gain new knowledge as that it what makes learning so exciting! For those of you who might have just started following this blog, my name is Emma and I am in my 4th years of my university journey on my way of becoming a teacher. With watching Magic School Bus as a child Ms. Frizzle became an inspiration to me. It was the way she always embraced all her students’ questions and made each class an experience that has encouraged me to strive to do that the same for my own future students.

Asking questions is a vital component to understanding the world around us, the media and technology make the world available at our fingertips and it is of upmost importance that our future doctors, politicians and police officers have the tools they need to be critical or what they see and hear. As a result, this term I am excited to learn how to apply vital 21st literacies to my future lessons. Since we live in such an ever changing diverse world I believe that our education system needs to be aware and open to changes. Change I believe needs to occur in the ways in which society views success. Standardized testing does not truly define success and does little to highlight and embrace students’ abilities and talents. With 21st century literacies students will be able to learn about the world around them that goes above and beyond simple textbook questions and standardized testing.

We as future educators, have this amazing opportunity to let our students ask questions or in Miss Frizzle words: “ask questions, take chances and get messy”. We no longer need to stand at the top of the classroom and simply “fill” students with knowledge. With these 21st century literacies (mental health literacy, media literacy, critical literacy, global literacy, financial literacy, multicultural literacy, technological literacy, moral literacy, environmental literacy and character education) we are able to give students opportunities and chances that are drastically different then those offered in the education system even 20 years ago. As a result, I believe that through teaching children these 21st century literacies, they will gain vital knowledge on how to be critically aware of the world around them and how to become successful both in their academics and in their future goals.

So fasten your seatbelts as you follow me in my journey to become a teacher who truly values her students and believes she can make a difference!
